Rabbi Yehuda L. Benhamu was born in Melilla, Spain. In 1961, he graduated high school and began his advanced rabbinical studies in England at the Sunderland Yeshiva. In 1966, he relocated to London to study in the High Rabbinical College Kollel. In 1967, he met his future wife, Evelyn, in France who was learning at the Beit Yaacov. Later that same year, they were married in London. In 1976, Rabbi Benhamu received his rabbinical ordination from the London Kollel and learned to be a shochet and mohel. Rabbi Benhamu and his family moved to Colon, Panama to begin his career as the Rabbi of the Sephardic Synagogue. In 1978, the family relocated to Bogota, Colombia in order for Rabbi Benhamu to accept the position of Rabbi, Shochet and Mohel of the large and active Sephardic community. In 1986, Rabbi Benhamu accepted the position of Rabbi of Bnai Sep hardim, Shaare Shalom in North Miami Beach, Florida. After growing this community, the synagogue was relocated to Hollywood, Florida. Bnai Sephardim, Shaare Shalom is one of the largest and active Sephardic congregations in South Florida. The synagogue today, serves over 250 families and is building a leading campus for further growth. Recently, Rabbi Benhamu was certified as a Dayan from the Rabba nut Harashit in Jerusalem, Israel.
Baruch Hashem, Rabbi and Evelyn Benhamu have raised 4 daughters and 2 sons and have many grandchildren. Two of their children made aliya over the last few years and are living in Ranaana, Israel.
